“New Twitter” Features Redesign, Multimedia

Twitter has a new look — in more ways than one.

Before nearly 100 reporters and analysts at its San Francisco office today, the social-media giant unfurled a redesign, which includes multimedia links that can be viewed from within a Twitter account, rather than from a separate browser page.

Previously, Twitter.com users had to view photos and videos from a separate Web page and not from the microblogging service. About a quarter of all tweets come with a link.

The upgraded Twitter site is splashier and more user-friendly than previous versions. User profile pages have also been updated. The layout in some ways resembles the user-friendly display of an Apple iPad.

As part of the overhaul, Twitter announced agreements with 16 tech vendors, including YouTubeFlickruStream andJustin.tv, to help enhance its new links. More partnerships are to come, Twitter said. The new Twitter.com launches today in an incremental roll-out over several weeks.

“We needed a better site,” Twitter co-founder Biz Stone said in an interview. “It hasn’t been changed in four years.”

The social-media service, with 160 million users, says its mobile use is up 250% this year.

Twitter CEO Evan Williams said that Twitter is for people who like to read short blog posts as well as those who like to write them. “To get value out of Twitter, you don’t have to tweet any more than you have to create a Web page to use the Web,” he said.
