Social Networking Etiquette: Knowing What Not To Do

Social networking sites can be great communication tools. They are excellent for keeping in touch with family/friends, meeting new people and even networking.

And while sites like Twitter, FaceBook, Linkedin and MySpace are popular for relationship building, one bad comment or post could seriously jeopardize your business and credibility.

One of the biggest mistakes business owners make is posting without thinking. This is just one of the don’ts I’ve seen online.

Here is a list of other social networking dos and don’ts.

  1. One big mistake that small business owners make is setting up an account and doing a disappearing act. I have to admit that I have been guilty of this one. If you’re going to set up an account you should be in a position to nurture it. You should upload new content frequently and make sure that your profile is always up to date. If you don’t have time to commit 100% to multiple channels of social media, try to pick one and focus on it.
  2. Don’t leave your friends and followers hanging. If someone comments on a post or link make sure that you engage them.
  3. Social Networking is called networking for a reason. You need to be genuine and soft in your approach to your followers. Avoid shoving your sales pitch down everyone’s funnel. You should focus on relationship building and try to actually get to know your followers. People find it really annoying having sales letter in their inbox from you every day or to see that you’ve posted your pitch on their wall or main page.
  4. It’s okay to be personable but not personal. By this I mean, if you’re upset with a friend or family member, your prospects or business connects don’t need to read about it on FaceBook or Twitter.
  5. Resist the urge to blast our your political views. It is okay however, to engage followers and friends in a political discussion that may be relevant to your industry.
  6. Perform a spell check and re-read your messages before pressing submit. You are trying to appear as an expert in your industry, right?
